What To Expect From Skill Positions In The NFL Draft

As the NFL draft approaches, anticipation and excitement are in the air for football enthusiasts, particularly those with a keen eye on the offensive skill positions. With every team aiming to bolster their roster with dynamic playmakers and game-changing talents, the draft serves as a pivotal moment where dreams are realized and franchises chart their course for the upcoming season. From the fleet-footed wide receivers capable of turning routine plays into highlight reels, to the speedy running backs who can penetrate defensive lines with amazing agility and strength, the stage is set for a spectacle of talent acquisition and strategic maneuvering. In this preview, we delve into the landscape of the NFL draft, exploring the potential gems and future stars set to grace the gridiron, igniting the imaginations of fans and pundits alike.

The 2024 NFL Draft boasts a wide receiver class of unparalleled depth and talent, setting the stage for a frenzy of selections. From towering red-zone threats to fleet-footed speedsters capable of stretching defenses to their limits, this year’s pool of wideouts offers a diverse array of skill sets sure to captivate fans and command attention from front offices across the league. With each prospect bringing their own unique blend of athleticism, route-running precision, and game-breaking potential, the draft promises to be a showcase of the next generation of receiving talent poised to make an immediate impact on Sundays.

Marvin Harrison Jr., a standout receiver from Ohio State, has emerged as a tantalizing prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. Drawing comparisons to some of the game’s elite playmakers, Harrison Jr. has captured the attention of scouts and analysts alike with his electrifying speed and game-changing ability. His stellar performance in the 2023 season at Ohio State, amassing an impressive 1237 total yards and 16 touchdowns, highlighted his knack for making big plays when it matters most. Notably, his explosive three-touchdown showcase against Michigan State showcased his ability to dominate top-tier competition. As the draft approaches, speculation abounds that Harrison Jr. could indeed be the best player available, a sentiment echoed by many within the football community. While teams like the Commanders and Patriots may be in dire need of wide receiver depth, their glaring deficiencies at the quarterback position may steer them away. However, the Arizona Cardinals, armed with the 4th overall pick, could be the perfect match for Harrison Jr.’s talents, providing Kyler Murray with a dynamic weapon to elevate their offensive attack to new heights.

Rome Odunze has also carved out a reputation as a reliable and tenacious wide receiver, showcasing the ability to convert crucial third-down situations with his gritty style of play. Coming from the University of Washington, Odunze boasts a physique reminiscent of the prototypical NFL receiver, standing tall and possessing the athleticism to make an impact at the next level. However, what truly sets him apart is his blue-collar approach to the game, shown by his ability to grind out tough yards and move the chains when it matters most. Despite his impressive total yardage of 1677 and 14 touchdowns in the 2023 season, it’s Odunze’s willingness to do the dirty work, whether it be securing a crucial completion on third and long or fighting for extra yardage after the catch, that truly distinguishes him. The Atlanta Falcons emerge as a potential landing spot ripe with opportunity for Odunze to thrive. With Kirk Cousins taking control at quarterback, Atlanta finds itself in a prime position to revitalize its offense and chart a new course toward success. Pairing Odunze with the likes of London Drake and Kyle Pitts would create a formidable receiving trio capable of challenging defenses in many ways. With the Falcons seeking to break free from the cycle of mediocrity that has plagued them in recent years, Odunze’s blue-collar work ethic and ability to consistently move the chains could provide the spark needed to propel Atlanta to new heights in the seasons to come.

A final receiver I would like to highlight in this article is Malik Nabers. Nabers, a speedster out of LSU, has emerged as a dynamic threat in the 2024 NFL Draft class, showcasing blazing speed and explosive playmaking ability that sets him apart from his peers. Nabers’ impressive performance at the LSU pro day, where he clocked an eye-popping 4.35 40-yard dash, highlights his elite athleticism and potential to stretch the field vertically. Throughout his college career, Nabers demonstrated his ability to make big plays and wreak havoc on opposing defenses with his breakaway speed. Despite his electrifying talent, Nabers’ draft stock may be tempered by concerns over his drop rate. His tendency to rely on body catches resulted in a high number of drops (17) which tied for the highest among receivers in the top 100 on the draft board. While this may give some teams pause, Nabers’ potential as a game-changing playmaker cannot be overlooked. Looking ahead, the Chicago Bears could be a prime destination for Nabers early in the second round. Pairing him with the likes of DJ Moore, Deandre Swift, and Keenan Allen would provide a formidable arsenal for presumed first-overall pick Caleb Williams. With Nabers’ speed adding another dimension to the Bears’ offense, there’s ample opportunity for him to carve out a role as an ideal slot receiver and grow into a key contributor alongside established playmakers. With the right guidance and development, Nabers has the potential to become a dynamic weapon at the next level, injecting speed and explosiveness into the Bears’ offensive attack.

Among the positions garnering significant interest, in this draft are the running backs, where a crop of electrifying prospects promises to inject new life into offenses across the league. From elusive speedsters capable of breaking off long runs to powerful workhorses who can move the chains with ease, this year’s running back class offers a diverse array of skill sets sure to captivate fans and decision-makers alike. As teams evaluate their needs and strategize for the future, the stage is set for a thrilling draft filled with potential game-changers in the backfield.

In the running back mix, one name deserving of an honorable mention is Xavier Worthy out of Texas. This speedster turned heads at the NFL Combine with a jaw-dropping 40-yard dash time of 4.21 seconds, showcasing his elite acceleration and breakaway speed. However, Worthy found himself somewhat overshadowed by his teammate, the standout superstar Jonathan Brooks. The shared workload between the two prevented either from truly emerging as the clear-cut number-one pick in the running back ranks. Despite this, Worthy’s explosive athleticism and big-play potential make him a tantalizing prospect for teams looking to inject some serious speed into their backfield, and he will be drafted later this month.

Trey Benson out of Florida State is a running back with all the makings of a future NFL star. Benson’s consistency is undeniable, averaging an impressive 6.1 yards per carry over the past two seasons. His performance at the NFL Combine further solidified his potential, showcasing his speed with the third-quickest 40-yard dash time among running backs. What’s more, Benson’s versatility extends beyond just running the ball; he’s a reliable option as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. However, it’s his physical prowess that truly sets him apart, boasting a high ceiling that’s impossible to ignore. Trey Benson could indeed be a game-changing addition for the Dallas Cowboys in the second round, especially considering the recent setback with Tony Pollard’s leaving for the Tennessee Titans impacting their running back depth. With Pollard gone, there’s a clear gap in the Cowboys’ backfield, making the upcoming draft an opportune time to shore up the position. Benson’s skill set aligns perfectly with what Dallas needs—a dynamic runner capable of shouldering the load and providing a reliable option in both the running and passing game.

Blake Corum out of the Michigan Wolverines has been nothing short of a powerhouse on the field, racking up an impressive 28 total touchdowns and 1362 total yards in a standout season. At the NFL Combine, Corum’s performance left scouts and analysts in awe, showcasing his athleticism and work ethic to perfection. With tape that speaks volumes about his ability, there’s little doubt about Corum’s potential at the next level However, there’s a flip side to every evaluation, and Corum’s hefty workload in college—675 career carries—raises some eyebrows. Yet, when you examine what Corum brings to the table, it’s evident that he’s tailor-made for success, provided he lands in the right scheme. A smooth runner with a deceptive glide step, Corum excels in various offensive systems, whether it’s gap, duo, or zone schemes. Beyond his on-field prowess, Corum’s leadership qualities shine through. A selfless teammate and natural leader, he epitomizes the values of hard work and dedication. The Los Angeles Chargers emerge as prime contenders to draft Blake Corum, especially under the helm of head coach Jim Harbaugh, who shares a history with Corum during their time together at Michigan. With Harbaugh’s intimate knowledge of Corum’s skill set and character, the Chargers are well-positioned to capitalize on this familiarity and secure the standout running back, especially with Austin Ekeler moving on the the Washington Commanders.

Having delved into the promising prospects among wide receivers and running backs, it’s time to shift our focus to another pivotal position in modern NFL offenses: tight ends. Just as crucial in both the passing and blocking game, tight ends have evolved into versatile weapons capable of stretching the field, providing reliable targets in the red zone, and contributing to the ground game with their blocking prowess.

Brock Bowers, a standout tight end from Georgia, has garnered significant attention for his remarkable performance on the field. Despite his relatively modest total yardage and touchdown numbers in 2023—742 yards and 7 touchdowns—Bowers’ strengths far outweigh any statistical concerns. Possessing rare agility for his position, Bowers showcases the ability to sidestep defenders and outrun tacklers with the finesse of a much lighter receiver. His exceptional balance through contact and instantaneous acceleration enables him to turn short receptions into substantial gains. However, there are lingering concerns regarding Bowers’ physical profile. Some scouts question whether his slightly undersized frame could pose durability issues in the long run, particularly at the demanding tight-end position. Despite these concerns, Bowers’ on-field prowess is undeniable. Bowers is hailed as one of the very few prospects capable of making an immediate impact in the NFL straight out of high school—an accolade that speaks volumes about his prodigious talent. An ideal spot for Bowers to land can be seen in the Indianapolis Colts early in the draft. With a quarterback on a rookie contract like Anthony Richardson, the Indianapolis Colts find themselves in a favorable position to bolster the rest of their roster in the coming years. Bowers’ exceptional abilities make him an enticing option for the Colts, especially given their need to maintain offensive firepower around their young signal-caller.

Ja’Tavion Sanders, the dynamic tight end from Texas, presents a tantalizing blend of athleticism and potential that has scouts buzzing. Possessing an athletic, well-built frame complemented by long arms and soft hands, Sanders stands out as a natural pass-catching threat. His explosive off the line of scrimmage and rare breakaway speed for a tight end make him a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses. Furthermore, Sanders exhibits impressive ball-tracking ability, showcasing concentration and toughness in contested catch situations. However, there are lingering concerns regarding Sanders’ game, particularly in his blocking abilities. While he possesses the athleticism to excel as a blocker, his lack of bulk and average technique raise questions about his effectiveness in this role. Additionally, Sanders’ tendency to be late off the snap and his high pad level when engaging defenders limit his impact as a run blocker.  Despite not generating the same level of buzz as Brock Bowers, Ja’Tavion Sanders is a legitimate mismatch nightmare in his own right. With immense potential waiting to be unlocked, Sanders appears to be just scratching the surface of his abilities. Ja’Tavion Sanders seems tailor-made for a second-round selection, and the Minnesota Vikings could be an ideal landing spot. With their need for a dynamic playmaker at the tight-end position, Sanders fits the bill perfectly. His combination of athleticism, hands, and ability to stretch the field would add a new dimension to the Vikings’ offense. Furthermore, Sanders’ potential to develop into a mismatch nightmare aligns well with the Vikings’ offensive scheme, which emphasizes creating mismatches and exploiting weaknesses in opposing defenses.

As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, anticipation reaches a fever pitch among fans, analysts, and teams alike. From electrifying wide receivers to versatile tight ends, this year’s draft class boasts a wealth of talent poised to make an impact at the next level. With each prospect bringing their unique blend of skills and potential, the stage is set for a draft filled with excitement, intrigue, and game-changing selections. Whether it’s Brock Bowers’ unmatched versatility, Ja’Tavion Sanders’ explosive athleticism, or the promise of breakout stars like Trey Benson and Xavier Worthy, the possibilities are endless. As teams prepare to add these budding stars to their rosters, one thing is certain: the future of the NFL has never looked brighter. Get ready for a draft to remember.
